Taking Over Edutopia's Instagram for Edcamp by Danielle Sigmon

It’s 8am on a Saturday & I struggle to find an open spot in the already packed parking lot at the Carilyn Gilbert Education Center. Once in the building, I’m greeted by the smell of coffee & dozens of smiling educators chatting away, some greeting old friends, others introducing themselves for the first time. Anticipation for what’s in store hangs in the air. The hum of people sharing ideas fills the room, before any of the sessions have even begun.

It’s edcamp day. 

I learned about edcamps two years ago, when I joined the social media marketing team at Edutopia. After attending my first edcamp in the San Francisco Bay area, I was hooked. I left that edcamp astonished by the passion I had witnessed as educators who didn’t even know each other collaborated on how they could improve their classrooms, their schools, their students. The question I kept coming back into in my mind was, “Why didn’t I know about this when I was a teacher?” 

I’m convinced that every educator should know about (& attend!) edcamp, which is why I jumped at the opportunity to pilot an “Instagram Takeover” at edcamp San Diego this fall. The takeover concept is pretty simple: for one day, an educator gets to share their own photos to Edutopia’s Instagram account. We love this idea because it allows us to elevate educator voice in a meaningful way. As you might have guessed, the theme of this particular takeover was “a day-in-the-life of an educator at edcamp.” Our guinea pig? Edu-rockstar, Reuben Hoffman. As a veteran ed-camper who also happens to dabble in digital photography, I couldn’t have been more pleased with his willingness to join this project & share his perspective.
